Physician
The Physician provides comprehensive primary care services to patients of all ages at the Rocky Boy Health Center. The Physician delivers high-quality clinical care, supports integrated team-based services, and contributes to RBHC’s mission of improving community health. The Physician works under the direction of the Medical Director and provides expert clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, health promotion, emergency stabilization, and referral management. The Physician also supports population health efforts, accreditation standards, and interdepartmental collaboration across the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive examinations, diagnosis, and treatment of medical conditions within approved clinical privileges and scope of practice.
- Prescribe and administer medications, treatments, and therapies in accordance with federal, tribal, and RBHC policies.
- Assess subjective and objective findings, determine appropriate care plans, and identify when referral to a higher level of care is indicated.
- Conduct detailed case histories, complete physical exams, and order or interpret laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic studies.
- Perform approved clinical procedures including splinting, casting, incision and drainage, suturing, joint injections, point-of-care testing, and other procedures as credentialed.
- Conduct preventive health exams and implement appropriate screenings, immunizations, health promotion, and chronic disease management.
- Provide emergency medical stabilization and accompany patient transports when medically necessary for safe transfer.
- Authorize and coordinate patient hospital admissions, transfers, and referrals to specialty or contract health services.
- Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, medication use, preventive care, and self-management strategies.
- Support training for students, residents, allied health staff, and new RBHC employees as needed.
- Provide technical and professional health education to the community, including presentations, events, and program support.
- Complete all documentation, referrals, treatment plans, and data entry in the electronic health record within 72 hours of the patient encounter.
- Refer patients to community health, behavioral health, case management, and social services for follow-up as appropriate:.
- Participate in assigned committees, which may include Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Medication Safety, Quality Assurance, Peer Review, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Conduct home, school, or community-based evaluations when clinically appropriate and approved by the supervisor, with documentation completed within 72 business hours.
- Maintain compliance with accreditation standards (AAAHC), credentialing requirements, and RBHC clinical policies.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as delegated and directed by the supervisor to support the overall functioning and objectives of the Rocky Boy Health Center, which may include tasks such as assisting with administrative duties, participating in quality improvement initiatives, contributing to team projects, or engaging in professional development activities.
- Must possess a valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States and meet licensing requirements under 25 U.S.C. § 1681 (Section 221 of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act).
- Must be board certified or board eligible in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or another approved primary care specialty.
- Must have completed an accredited residency program in the appropriate specialty.
- Broad knowledge of primary care across the lifespan, including chronic disease management, acute care, preventive health, women’s health, pediatrics, and behavioral health integration.
- Knowledge of clinical principles, practices, and evidence-based guidelines applicable to primary care in an outpatient setting.
- Board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or a dual discipline (e.g., Med-Peds).
- Experience working in tribal health, IHS, rural health, or underserved communities.
- Experience working in urgent care or emergency care settings.
- Knowledge of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA), ISDEAA, and the Federal Tort Claims Act framework.
- Advanced training or experience in emergency medicine, urgent care, or stabilization of critically ill patients in low-resource settings.
- Experience with integrated behavioral health models, medication-assisted treatment, chronic disease management, or population health initiatives.
- Prior leadership experience such as precepting, quality improvement work, or participation in clinical committees.
- Strong understanding of trauma-informed care, culturally responsive care, and strengths-based communication approaches.
- Ability to adapt care strategies to resource-limited environments and high-acuity situations.
