Position Summary

The Lab Assistant supports the daily operations of the Laboratory Department by performing specimen collection, assisting with laboratory testing procedures, supporting basic radiology operations, maintaining documentation, and assisting with quality assurance and patient care activities. This position serves as a frontline support role for laboratory and imaging services and is responsible for ensuring accurate specimen handling, proper patient preparation, professional customer service, and compliance with applicable regulatory and safety standards.

The Lab Assistant works collaboratively with laboratory personnel, radiology personnel, providers, nursing staff, and other departments to support timely and quality patient care services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs venipuncture and collects laboratory specimens from patients according to provider orders and established laboratory procedures.
  • Properly labels, handles, processes, stores, and transports specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Verifies patient identification prior to specimen collection to ensure patient safety and specimen accuracy.
  • Assists in preparing specimens for referral testing and shipment to outside laboratories.
  • Performs CLIA-waived laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures, competency requirements, and manufacturer instructions.
  • Performs and documents daily, weekly, and regularly scheduled quality control (QC) procedures and preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment and instruments as assigned.
  • Maintains laboratory logs, records, and documentation required for compliance and accreditation purposes.
  • Assists radiology personnel with patient preparation and workflow for diagnostic imaging procedures.
  • Performs basic x-ray operations and radiology support functions within the scope of training, competency, and organizational authorization.
  • Escorts and positions patients for imaging procedures as directed by radiology personnel.
  • Ensures patients are properly screened and prepared for imaging procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining radiology records, logs, and documentation.
  • Cleans and prepares imaging rooms and equipment between patients in accordance with infection prevention standards.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, or operational issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Answers laboratory and radiology telephone calls and relays questions, requests, and concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Provides professional and courteous customer service to patients, staff, and outside agencies.
  • Logs, files, scans, and distributes laboratory and radiology reports as appropriate.
  • Communicates effectively with providers, nursing staff, and patients regarding laboratory and imaging procedures and requirements.
  • Participates in quality assurance, quality improvement, infection prevention, and patient safety activities as assigned.
  • Maintains compliance with CLIA, COLA, OSHA, HIPAA, radiation safety standards, infection control requirements, and Rocky Boy Health Center policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follows universal precautions and safety procedures at all times.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe laboratory and imaging environment.
  • Participates in required trainings, competency assessments, and continuing education activities.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient, employee, and organizational information.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, reliability, and accountability in attendance and job performance.
  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of Rocky Boy Health Center.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program preferred.
  • Previous healthcare, laboratory, phlebotomy, radiology, or clinical support experience preferred.
  • Experience performing specimen collection and basic radiology procedures preferred.
  • Experience working in a tribal healthcare setting preferred.
  • Current phlebotomy certification required or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Current Basic X-Ray certification/license required in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations, or ability to obtain within an established timeframe approved by RBHC.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification or ability to obtain within established timeframe.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.
  • Must successfully complete RBHC background investigation, including:
    • FBI fingerprint-based background check
    • Drug screening
    • Any additional screenings required by RBHC policy
