Position Summary:
The Optometric Technician supports the delivery of high-quality vision care by assisting optometrists and the Optical Department in both clinical and administrative functions. This role is responsible for conducting patient pretesting and auxiliary testing, accurately documenting patient medical history in the electronic health record (EHR), and serving as a scribe during exams. The technician assists in co-managing patient care with other RBHC departments and outside providers, supports optical services such as ordering, dispensing, and repairing eyewear, and educates patients in contact lens use and care.

The position also involves providing direct patient communication, addressing inquiries and complaints, coordinating the autumn school screening program, and performing shared front desk duties to ensure seamless clinic operations. The Optometric Technician plays a vital role in enhancing patient experience and ensuring continuity of care within the RBHC vision program.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts pretesting and auxiliary testing of patients
  • Interviews patients and documents medical history, alerts to allergies, etc and documents in EHR
  • Scribes for Optometrist during patient exams
  • Assists in co-management of patient care with other RBHC departments and outside referrals Follow-up with patient inquiries, requests, and complaints
  • Assists with optical needs such as orders, dispenses, and repairs
  • Co-manages front desk duties with optical assistant
  • Contacts Lens Training and Education: Instructs patients in contact lens insertion, removal, cleaning, and education of care of contacts.  Answers patient inquiries about general contact lens questions such as contact lens solutions and visual conditions.
  • Assists with coordinating and performing autumn school screening program with school and care coordinators.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in a healthcare, optical, or customer service setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with patients and staff.
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn and use electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Willingness to complete training in optometric procedures, scribing, and contact lens education.

Desired Qualifications

  • Completion of a certified optometric or ophthalmic technician program.
  • At least one year of direct experience as an optometric/ophthalmic technician or medical assistant.
  • Familiarity with optical services including eyewear ordering, dispensing, and minor repairs.
  • Experience with patient education, particularly in contact lens care.
  • Knowledge of vision testing equipment and procedures.
  • Experience working in a tribal, community health, or multidisciplinary healthcare setting.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
